Tips for the CISI UK Financial Regulation exam are easy to find. Most of them are generic — read the workbook, do some practice questions, get a good night's sleep. What follows is more specific — the things that actually separate candidates who pass comfortably from those who scrape through or fail.
The single most impactful thing a candidate can do is understand the real distribution of the exam before they start revising. Chapter 2 — COBS and CASS — carries approximately 35 of the 75 questions. Nearly half the paper. Allocate your preparation time accordingly.
The CISI regulation exam is full of lists — the 12 FCA Principles, the three client categories, the stages of money laundering. Memorising lists is necessary but not sufficient. The exam tests application, not recitation.
The CISI exam uses precise language deliberately. The difference between "must" and "may," between "always" and "generally," between "retail client" and "professional client" — these distinctions determine the correct answer.
After answering a practice question, most candidates check whether they got it right and move on. This is the least efficient way to use practice questions. The explanation for why each wrong option is wrong is where the most valuable learning happens.
Market abuse and AML feel more abstract than the conduct rules in COBS, and candidates frequently deprioritise them. Both contribute meaningfully to the paper.
75 questions in 90 minutes is one minute and twelve seconds per question. Run at least two or three full timed mock exams before your sitting.
The pass mark is approximately 70% — around 53 correct answers out of 75. That means you can get 22 questions wrong and still pass. Answer what you know, flag what you are unsure of, and come back.
